Speaker Pro Tempore
The speaker pro tempore is appointed in the same way as the speaker. The Speaker pro tempore acts as speaker in the absence of the speaker. If the chair is ever permanently vacated the speaker pro tempore acts as the temporary presiding officer until the House elects a new speaker. The Speaker pro tempore, although not officially a powerful position, generally serves as a major power player in the House. The House of Reprentatives created the position in 1972.

Famous quotes containing the words speaker and/or pro:
“If the oarsmen of a fast-moving ship suddenly cease to row, the suspension of the driving force of the oars doesnt prevent the vessel from continuing to move on its course. And with a speech it is much the same. After he has finished reciting the document, the speaker will still be able to maintain the same tone without a break, borrowing its momentum and impulse from the passage he has just read out.”
—Marcus Tullius Cicero (10643 B.C)
“It is sweet and honourable to die for ones country.
[Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori.]”
—Horace [Quintus Horatius Flaccus] (658 B.C.)
