Southern Tamandua - Reproduction

Reproduction

Females are polyestrous; mating generally takes place in the fall. Gestation ranges from 130 to 190 days and one young is born in the spring. At birth the young anteater does not resemble its parents; its coat varies from white to black. It rides on the mother's back for a period of time and is sometimes deposited on a safe branch while the mother forages.

Famous quotes containing the word reproduction:

The chief function of the city is to convert power into form, energy into culture, dead matter into the living symbols of art, biological reproduction into social creativity.
    Lewis Mumford (1895–1990)

The atmosphere parents wish to create when talking with children about birth and reproduction is warm, honest, and reassuring, one that tells children they are free to ask questions as often as they need to, and you will answer them as lovingly as you know how.
    Joanna Cole (20th century)

    An original is a creation
    motivated by desire.
    Any reproduction of an original
    is motivated by necessity ...
It is marvelous that we are
    the only species that creates
    gratuitous forms.
To create is divine, to reproduce
    is human.
    Man Ray (1890–1976)
