Southern Chicken Stew - Cultural Traditions

Cultural Traditions

Because of its low cost of preparation and reputation as a local comfort food, chicken stew is often served at large social gatherings such as church fellowships, family reunions and community fundraisers. It is a tradition at these gatherings to prepare the stew in a large cast iron or stainless steel pot, often outdoors over an open fire. Bowls of stew are sometimes complimented with coleslaw, rice or grilled cheese sandwiches. In North Carolina and Georgia, "chicken stews" or "chicken mulls" are usually held during the colder seasons, with most events occurring September through December.

Famous quotes containing the words cultural and/or traditions:

The men who are messing up their lives, their families, and their world in their quest to feel man enough are not exercising true masculinity, but a grotesque exaggeration of what they think a man is. When we see men overdoing their masculinity, we can assume that they haven’t been raised by men, that they have taken cultural stereotypes literally, and that they are scared they aren’t being manly enough.
    Frank Pittman (20th century)

... the more we recruit from immigrants who bring no personal traditions with them, the more America is going to ignore the things of the spirit. No one whose consuming desire is either for food or for motor-cars is going to care about culture, or even know what it is.
    Katharine Fullerton Gerould (1879–1944)
