South Norwood Country Park

South Norwood Country Park is a park in South Norwood, close to Elmers End station, mainly in the London Borough of Croydon. It is a 47 hectare (116 acre) green space which opened in 1989. The park occupies a mix of countryside and parkland, and land formerly used for sewage farms serving the growing London population.

It is very popular with cyclists and has several viewpoints where you can see the Docklands sky scrapers. Croydon Sports Arena, the home of Croydon F.C., is located on the south-eastern edge of the park. There is also a car park and visitor centre which holds annual open days which include face painting, pole lathe demonstration, guided walks, refreshments and a skittle alley to raise awareness for the park. There is also a duck pond similar to the one at South Norwood Lake.

Famous quotes containing the words south, country and/or park:

The South is very beautiful but its beauty makes one sad because the lives that people live here, and have lived here, are so ugly.
    James Baldwin (1924–1987)

No author, without a trial, can conceive of the difficulty of writing a romance about a country where there is no shadow, no antiquity, no mystery, no picturesque and gloomy wrong, nor anything but a commonplace prosperity, in broad and simple daylight, as is happily the case with my dear native land.
    Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864)

Borrow a child and get on welfare.
Borrow a child and stay in the house all day with the child,
or go to the public park with the child, and take the child
to the welfare office and cry and say your man left you and
be humble and wear your dress and your smile, and don’t talk
    back ...
    Susan Griffin (b. 1943)
