South East England

South East England is one of nine official regions of England at the first level of NUTS for statistical purposes. It consists of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey and West Sussex. As with the other regions of England, apart from Greater London, the South East has no elected government and few powers. The Labour Party's proposals during the general election of 1997 to create elected regional governments were abandoned. The headquarters for the region's governmental bodies are in Guildford.

To lib and die in Dixie!
Away, away, away down South in Dixie!
    Daniel Decatur Emmett (1815–1904)

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The LORD drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and turned the sea into dry land; and the waters were divided. The Israelites went into the sea on dry ground, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left.
    Bible: Hebrew, Exodus 14:21,22.

I see not much difference between ourselves & the Turks, save that we have foreskins and they none, that they have long dresses and we short, and that we talk much and they little. In England the vices in fashion are whoring & drinking, in Turkey, sodomy and smoking.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)
