Legacy
The game introduced two new characters; Blaze the Cat and Eggman Nega. Both characters went on to appear in other games in the Sonic series.
For Sonic's 20th anniversary, Sonic Generations includes levels and gameplay aspects from past games in the series. The "Water Palace" stage of this game is a returning stage for the 3DS version, making it the only returning stage in the game to come from a handheld title.
