Songs From A Room - The Partisan

The Partisan

"The Partisan" is Cohen's cover of the French song "La Complainte du Partisan" by Emmanuel D'Astier and Anna Marly, which is about the French resistance during World War II. The English translation was written by Hy Zaret. The rock journalist Tim Nordberg notes, " is often incorrectly credited as the composer of the song –although he is certainly responsible for its survival." Nordberg also notes that the English translation that Cohen recorded differs from the French in that it excludes the direct references that D'Astier and Marly made in the original lyric to the occupation of France by Nazi Germany.

Famous quotes containing the word partisan:

Democracy and Republicanism in their best partisan utterances alike declare for human rights. Jefferson, the father of Democracy, Lincoln, the embodiment of Republicanism, and the Divine author of the religion on which true civilization rests, all proclaim the equal rights of all men.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

The trenchant editorials plus the keen rivalry natural to extremely partisan papers made it necessary for the editors to be expert pugilists and duelists as well as journalists. An editor made no assertion that he could not defend with fists or firearms.
