Socialist Party of Alberta - Defeat and Decline

Defeat and Decline

The party was not very well organized, despite running six candidates in the 1913 Alberta general election. The party lost almost half its popular vote. Charles O'Brien was defeated by Conservative candidate Robert Campbell. Charles O'Brien doubled his vote from the previous election, while other candidates barely made a showing.

The party continued running candidates until the 1921 general election, but made little impact.

Famous quotes containing the words defeat and/or decline:

Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.
    Henry Miller (1891–1980)

Considered physiologically, everything ugly weakens and saddens man. It reminds him of decay, danger, impotence; it actually reduces his strength. The effect of ugliness can be measured with a dynamometer. Whenever anyone feels depressed, he senses the proximity of something “ugly.” His feeling of power, his will to power, his courage, his pride—they decline with ugliness, they rise with beauty.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
