Socialist Equality Party (United States) - Public Conferences

Public Conferences

In 2009, the Socialist Equality Party held regional public conferences in Los Angeles, California (May 10), New York City (May 3), and Ann Arbor, Michigan (April 25). The topic of the conferences was "The world economic crisis, the failure of capitalism and the case for socialism." According to a report, the conferences were attended by workers and students from across the country. A resolution passed at the conference was later published by the party on May 20.

On April 18 and 19 2010, the party held a public conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan on the topic of "Social Crisis and War: The Fight for a Socialist Alternative." A report claimed that the conference was attended by "many workers and working class youth who have been drawn into politics by the economic crisis." On April 23, the party published the resolutions passed at the conference on the World Socialist Web Site. The resolution on socialist program called for "the international unity of the working class," "the political independence of the working class," "an emergency public works program," "nationalization of the banks and major corporations," "redistribution of wealth," "an end to militarism and war," and "defense of democratic rights."

Famous quotes containing the word public:

Consider any individual at any period of his life, and you will always find him preoccupied with fresh plans to increase his comfort. Do not talk to him about the interests and rights of the human race; that little private business of his for the moment absorbs all his thoughts, and he hopes that public disturbances can be put off to some other time.
    Alexis de Tocqueville (1805–1859)
