Socialist Equality Party (United States) - Elections

Elections

The Socialist Equality Party has also run candidates in several recent elections. In 2003, it ran John Christopher Burton in the California recall gubernatorial elections, although it urged people to vote "No" on the recall because it saw the recall campaign as an anti-democratic attempt by right-wing forces to undo the results of the election that happened only a few months earlier. Burton received 6,000 votes and came in 13th in a field of 135 candidates.

In the 2004 presidential elections, it nominated Bill Van Auken for President and Jim Lawrence for Vice-President.

The Socialist Equality Party also ran candidates for the 2006 US mid-term elections, including Bill Van Auken for US Senate in New York State, Jerome White for Congress in Michigan and John Burton for Congress in California. In its elections it called for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all US troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Other candidates, announced on the World Socialist Web Site on May 15, 2006 included:

  • Joe Parnarauskis, a nurse, for Illinois State Senate (District 52, Champaign-Urbana)
  • Eric Des Marais, a graduate student, for Maine State Senate (District 32, Bangor)
  • Christie M. Schaefer, a service worker, for Oregon State Senate (District 19, Portland)
  • Paul Palinkas, a computer consultant, for Washington State House (District 36, Seattle)

In 2008, the party did not seek ballot status, citing "prohibitive ballot access laws." It instead encouraged voters to write the candidates in.

In 2009, the party sponsored D’Artagnan Collier in the Detroit mayoral election.

In 2010, the party sponsored Collier as a candidate for state representative in Michigan’s 9th District in Detroit.

In 2012, the SEP ran Jerry White for president and Phyllis Scherrer for vice president.

Famous quotes containing the word elections:

In my public statements I have earnestly urged that there rested upon government many responsibilities which affect the moral and spiritual welfare of our people. The participation of women in elections has produced a keener realization of the importance of these questions and has contributed to higher national ideals. Moreover, it is through them that our national ideals are ingrained in our children.
    Herbert Hoover (1874–1964)

Apparently, a democracy is a place where numerous elections are held at great cost without issues and with interchangeable candidates.
    Gore Vidal (b. 1925)
