Famous quotes containing the words natural, artificial and/or environment:
“BOSWELL ... Is not the fear of death natural to man? JOHNSON. So much so, Sir, that the whole of life is but keeping away the thought of it.”
—Samuel Johnson (17091784)
“Look not too long in the face of the fire, O man! Never dream with thy hand on the helm! Turn not they back to the compass; accept the first hint of the hitching tiller; believe not the artificial fire, when its redness makes all things look ghastly.”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
“People between twenty and forty are not sympathetic. The child has the capacity to do but it cant know. It only knows when it is no longer able to doafter forty. Between twenty and forty the will of the child to do gets stronger, more dangerous, but it has not begun to learn to know yet. Since his capacity to do is forced into channels of evil through environment and pressures, man is strong before he is moral. The worlds anguish is caused by people between twenty and forty.”
—William Faulkner (18971962)
