Social Democratic Party of Montenegro

The Social Democratic Party of Montenegro (Montenegrin: Социјалдемократска партија Црне Горе, Socijaldemokratska Partija Crne Gore) is a political party in Montenegro.

A minor party, according to all polls, with minuscule popular support in Montenegro, SDP has nevertheless managed to play a notable part on the republic's political scene during the last decade. The party's prominence stems from its close relations with the most powerful party in Montenegro - DPS and its leader Milo Đukanović. Allying itself with DPS and Đukanović ahead of the 1998 parliamentary elections allowed SDP to get into the parliament for the very first time in its history - something it wasn't able to do by itself in three previous tries. Ever since the 1998 election, SDP continued to be a part of every Đukanović-led pre-election coalition (three more elections since then) and as a result SDP has also been a part of every Montenegrin government.

At the last legislative elections in Montenegro in March 2009, the party was emerged victorious as part of DPS-SDP list that managed to win 47 seats (Montenegrin parliament has a total of 81 seats).

Famous quotes containing the words social, democratic and/or party:

Civilization, for every advantage she imparts, holds a hundred evils in reserve;Mthe heart burnings, the jealousies, the social rivalries, the family dissensions, and the thousand self-inflicted discomforts of refined life, which make up in units the swelling aggregate of human misery.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

The debates of that great assembly are frequently vague and perplexed, seeming to be dragged rather than to march, to the intended goal. Something of this sort must, I think, always happen in public democratic assemblies.
    Alexis de Tocqueville (1805–1859)

The women’s liberation movement at this point in history makes the American Communist Party of the 1930s look like a monolith.
    Nora Ephron (b. 1941)
