Systems of Stratification
These systems share 3 characteristics. They are as follows:
1. The rankings apply to social categories of people who share a common characteristic without necessarily interacting or identifying with each other.
2. People's life experiences and opportunities depend on the ranking of their social category.
3. The ranks of different social categories change very slowly over time.

Famous quotes containing the words systems of and/or systems:
“The geometry of landscape and situation seems to create its own systems of time, the sense of a dynamic element which is cinematising the events of the canvas, translating a posture or ceremony into dynamic terms. The greatest movie of the 20th century is the Mona Lisa, just as the greatest novel is Grays Anatomy.”
—J.G. (James Graham)
“People stress the violence. Thats the smallest part of it. Football is brutal only from a distance. In the middle of it theres a calm, a tranquility. The players accept pain. Theres a sense of order even at the end of a running play with bodies stewn everywhere. When the systems interlock, theres a satisfaction to the game that cant be duplicated. Theres a harmony.”
—Don Delillo (b. 1926)
