Slovenian Democratic Party

The Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovene: Slovenska demokratska stranka, SDS), known until 2003 as the Social Democratic Party of Slovenia (Socialdemokratska stranka Slovenije) is conservative political party in Slovenia. It is led by Janez Janša, the Prime Minister-designate of Slovenia, and is currently the largest coalition party in Slovenia. SDS won 26.19% of the vote at the early 2011 Slovenian parliamentary election on 4 December 2011, thus gaining 26 seats in the National Assembly.

The SDS is one of the two largest parties in Slovenia, along with the centre-left opposition party Positive Slovenia. The SDS is the second-largest party in the National Assembly, with 26 MPs (28.8% of the total) as of the 2011 election. In the 2009 European Parliament election, it obtained 26.7% of the votes, which yielded three seats out of eight from Slovenia. The SDS is a member of the European People's Party (EPP) and its MEPs sit in the EPP Group in the European parliament.

Famous quotes containing the words democratic party, democratic and/or party:

The Republican party makes even its young men seem old; the Democratic Party makes even its old men seem young.
    Adlai Stevenson (1900–1965)

    Follow me if I advance
    Kill me if I retreat
    Avenge me if I die.
Mary Matalin, U.S. Republican political advisor, author, and James Carville b. 1946, U.S. Democratic political advisor, author. All’s Fair: Love, War, and Running for President, epigraph (from a Vietnamese battle cry)

He said, truly, that the reason why such greatly superior numbers quailed before him was, as one of his prisoners confessed, because they lacked a cause,—a kind of armor which he and his party never lacked. When the time came, few men were found willing to lay down their lives in defense of what they knew to be wrong; they did not like that this should be their last act in this world.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
