Ski touring is an activity where long distances are covered on skis. Ski touring is typically done in the "backcountry," on trails which are not mechanically groomed for skiing. The touring skier will not only ski downhill, but will also use climbing skins or sticky wax with special "free heel" bindings and boots in order to hike on the skis, as in Nordic, and unlike Alpine skiing. Ski tours can often extend over a period of more than one day, and can involve winter camping or traveling from "hut to hut."
