Skaraborg County, or Skaraborgs län, was a county of Sweden until December 31, 1998 when it was merged with the counties of Gothenburg and Bohus and Älvsborg to form Västra Götaland County.
The former county was named after a fortress (in Swedish borg) outside the city of Skara, the seat of residence for the county governor was Mariestad, and the largest city was Skövde. The county consisted of the northern part of the province of Västergötland.
Even though Skaraborg County itself no longer exists, various organizations are still (in 2006) named after it, and cover that approximate area. These include several newspapers, one public radio channel (P4 Skaraborg) and various non-profit organizations. Also, the local hospital complex is called Skaraborgs sjukhus.

Famous quotes containing the word county:
“Dont you know there are 200 temperance women in this county who control 200 votes. Why does a woman work for temperance? Because shes tired of liftin that besotted mate of hers off the floor every Saturday night and puttin him on the sofa so he wont catch cold. Tonight were for temperance. Help yourself to them cloves and chew them, chew them hard. Were goin to that festival tonight smelling like a hot mince pie.”
