Sixteen Women

Pausanias, in his Description of Greece (c. 175 CE), refers to "the Sixteen Women." It's unclear how "the Sixteen Women" became a group. Several interpretations exist, including that they were selected as negotiators from 16 cities, for the purpose of making peace between Elis and Pisa.

Famous quotes containing the words sixteen and/or women:

I watched a small man with thick calluses on both hands work fifteen and sixteen hours a day. I saw him once literally bleed from the bottoms of his feet, a man who came here uneducated, alone, unable to speak the language, who taught me all I needed to know about faith and hard work by the simple eloquence of his example.
    Mario Cuomo (b. 1932)

Saints are simply men & women who have fulfilled their natural obligation which is to approach God.
    Evelyn Waugh (1903–1966)
