Sirtuin - Species Distribution

Species Distribution

Whereas bacteria and archaea encode either one or two sirtuins, eukaryotes encode several sirtuins in their genomes. In yeast, roundworms, and fruitflies, sir2 is the name of the sirtuin-type protein. This research started in 1991 by Leonard Guarente of MIT. Mammals possess seven sirtuins (SIRT1-7) that occupy different subcellular compartments such as the nucleus (SIRT1, -2, -6, -7), cytoplasm (SIRT1 and SIRT2) and the mitochondria (SIRT3, -4 and -5).

Famous quotes containing the words species and/or distribution:

As kings are begotten and born like other men, it is to be presumed that they are of the human species; and perhaps, had they the same education, they might prove like other men. But, flattered from their cradles, their hearts are corrupted, and their heads are turned, so that they seem to be a species by themselves.... Flattery cannot be too strong for them; drunk with it from their infancy, like old drinkers, they require dreams.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)

Classical and romantic: private language of a family quarrel, a dead dispute over the distribution of emphasis between man and nature.
    Cyril Connolly (1903–1974)
