Marriage and Family
In 1792, he married his first wife Jane Hall, the daughter of a Liverpool merchant. However, she died in 1798.
In 1800, he married his second wife Anne MacKenzie Robertson, the daughter of Andrew Robertson, a solicitor and the Provost of Dingwall in Ross-shire. They had six children together:

- Sir Thomas Gladstone, 2nd Baronet (1804–1889)
- Robertson Gladstone (1805–1875)
- John Neilson Gladstone (1807–1863)
- William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898)
- Helen Jane Gladstone (1814–1880)
