Simon Bening - Works

Works

Bening was commisioned by Robert de Clercq, abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Ter Duinen (‘Les Dunes’) at Koksijde near Bruges to illuminate a Benedictional for him sometime between 1519 and 1529. Bening even included Robert de Clercq in a colourful Crucifixion scene. The manuscript is currently held in Cambridge University Library.

Famous quotes containing the word works:

He never works and never bathes, and yet he appears well fed always.... Well, what does he live on then?
Edward T. Lowe, and Frank Strayer. Sauer (William V. Mong)

...A shadow now occasionally crossed my simple, sanguine, and life enjoying mind, a notion that I was never really going to accomplish those powerful literary works which would blow a noble trumpet to social generosity and noblesse oblige before the world. What? should I find myself always planning and never achieving ... a richly complicated and yet firmly unified novel?
    Sarah N. Cleghorn (1876–1959)

Through the din and desultoriness of noon, even in the most Oriental city, is seen the fresh and primitive and savage nature, in which Scythians and Ethiopians and Indians dwell. What is echo, what are light and shade, day and night, ocean and stars, earthquake and eclipse, there? The works of man are everywhere swallowed up in the immensity of nature. The AEgean Sea is but Lake Huron still to the Indian.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
