Plimpton eventually broadened his article into a novel, first published in 1987. The book discussed Finch's "brief re-committment to baseball," in which stories of Sadaharu Oh and Steve Dalkowski, as well as Finch's girlfriend, inspire Finch to stick with baseball, and he reaches Major League Baseball with the Mets.
In 2001, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays signed Toe Nash, an unknown semi-professional player from Louisiana, who could reportedly throw 90 miles per hour (140 km/h) and hit towering home runs from both sides of the plate. Nash's story sounded to baseball executives like a hoax, similar to that of Finch.
