Using The Stack To Determine A Selected Card

The value of a card selected from a deck in Si Stebbins order can be determined by the card immediately proceeding or following it.

In Card Tricks And The Way They Are Performed Stebbins instructs the performer to have a card selected and cut the cards above the selection to the bottom of the deck. Then, by looking at the bottom card, the spectators selection can be revealed.

For instance, if the card on the bottom is the Nine of Diamonds, the performer will add three to the numeric value making 12 (or Queen) and move to the next suit in the order (Clubs). The selected card is the Queen of Clubs.

Famous quotes containing the words stack, determine, selected and/or card:

What is a farm but a mute gospel? The chaff and the wheat, weeds and plants, blight, rain, insects, sun—it is a sacred emblem from the first furrow of spring to the last stack which the snow of winter overtakes in the fields.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Many readers judge of the power of a book by the shock it gives their feelings—as some savage tribes determine the power of muskets by their recoil; that being considered best which fairly prostrates the purchaser.
    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882)

The best history is but like the art of Rembrandt; it casts a vivid light on certain selected causes, on those which were best and greatest; it leaves all the rest in shadow and unseen.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)

There is undoubtedly something religious about it: everyone believes that they are special, that they are chosen, that they have a special relation with fate. Here is the test: you turn over card after card to see in which way that is true. If you can defy the odds, you may be saved. And when you are cleaned out, the last penny gone, you are enlightened at last, free perhaps, exhilarated like an ascetic by the falling away of the material world.
    Andrei Codrescu (b. 1947)
