Show Gate was a champion New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse sired by Gatekeeper out of Minglow. Foaled in 1969, she was horse of the year in 1975 and 1977 and won races from 1200 metres up to 2400 metres in record time. She started in 51 races, winning 30, was second 7 times, third twice and unplaced in 12 races.
Show Gate suffered a fractured sesamoid bone in the spring of 1974 after winning her first five races as a five year-old. She returned to racing as a seven year-old, winning 7 of her 13 starts and ran a gallant second to Good Lord in the 1977 Wellington Cup, despite carrying 57 kg and being severely injured during the race.
Famous quotes containing the words show and/or gate:
“Women hock their jewels and their husbands insurance policies to acquire an unaccustomed shade in hair or crêpe de chine. Why then is it that when anyone commits anything novel in the arts he should be always greeted by this same peevish howl of pain and surprise? One is led to suspect that the interest people show in these much talked of commodities, painting, music, and writing, cannot be very deep or very genuine when they so wince under an unexpected impact.”
—John Dos Passos (18961970)
“What was dancing to you then?
We went from the high gate away
To a black hill the other side of men
Where one wild stag stared
At the going day.”
—Allen Tate (18991979)
