Reception and Performance
Short Ride in a Fast Machine has been generally well received in terms of performance, according to a report in 2008 that places the fanfare as "the tenth most-performed orchestral work composed in the last twenty-five years." Along with popularity, however, comes controversy. Short Ride in a Fast Machine was scheduled to be performed on two occasions at the Last Night of the Proms, a British festival known for featuring major works, and both times it was cancelled. The first time occurred after the death of Princess Diana in 1997 because of the potential controversy with the title of the work, and the second time occurred after the September 11 terrorist attack for the same reason.

Famous quotes containing the words reception and/or performance:
“Hes leaving Germany by special request of the Nazi government. First he sends a dispatch about Danzig and how 10,000 German tourists are pouring into the city every day with butterfly nets in their hands and submachine guns in their knapsacks. They warn him right then. What does he do next? Goes to a reception at von Ribbentropfs and keeps yelling for gefilte fish!”
—Billy Wilder (b. 1906)
“There are people who think that wrestling is an ignoble sport. Wrestling is not sport, it is a spectacle, and it is no more ignoble to attend a wrestled performance of suffering than a performance of the sorrows of Arnolphe or Andromaque.”
—Roland Barthes (19151980)
