- the son of U.S. Attorney General, Congressman and Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Justice Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar;
- a nephew of U.S. Senator George Frisbie Hoar; and
- cousin to Massachusetts Congressman Rockwood Hoar.
