Shenwa Language

Shenwa, also spelled Chenoua (autonym HaqbaylitÌ ), is the Berber language of Jebel Chenoua in Algeria, just west of Algiers in the provinces of Tipasa (incl Cherchell) and Chlef. The speech of Jebel Chenoua proper is mutually comprehensible with that of the nearby Beni Menacer, and the two are thus treated as a single language. According to the Ethnologue (2009), Shenwa has 76,300 speakers.

Famous quotes containing the word language:

Public speaking is done in the public tongue, the national or tribal language; and the language of our tribe is the men’s language. Of course women learn it. We’re not dumb. If you can tell Margaret Thatcher from Ronald Reagan, or Indira Gandhi from General Somoza, by anything they say, tell me how. This is a man’s world, so it talks a man’s language.
    Ursula K. Le Guin (b. 1929)
