Senior Station Officer

Senior Station Officer is a rank in the New Zealand Fire Service. In career fire stations, an SSO will be the officer in charge of a single watch at a station with multiple appliances. They will ride as officer on one appliance, with the other appliances being commanded by Station Officers.

Senior Station Officer is also a rank in the MFB (Metropolitan Fire Brigade) in Melbourne, Australia. It also became a rank in the CFA (Country Fire Authority) in 2010.

In a volunteer brigade there will usually be only one SSO, and some volunteer brigades have no SSO positions at all. Here the SSO acts as the senior operational officer, to allow the Chief Fire Officer and their deputy to focus on the running of the brigade.

In both career and volunteer situations, an SSO reports to a CFO.

Famous quotes containing the words senior, station and/or officer:

I suffer whenever I see that common sight of a parent or senior imposing his opinion and way of thinking and being on a young soul to which they are totally unfit. Cannot we let people be themselves, and enjoy life in their own way? You are trying to make that man another you. One’s enough.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

...I believe it is now the duty of the slaves of the South to rebuke their masters for their robbery, oppression and crime.... No station or character can destroy individual responsibility, in the matter of reproving sin.
    Angelina Grimké (1805–1879)

When Prince William [later King William IV] was at Cork in 1787, an old officer ... dined with him, and happened to say he had been forty years in the service. The Prince with a sneer asked what he had learnt in those forty years. The old gentleman justly offended, said, “Sir, I have learnt, when I am no longer fit to fight, to make as good a retreat as I can” —and walked out of the room.
    Horace Walpole (1717–1797)
