Senior Australian Defence Organisation Positions

This page provides a list of Senior Australian Defence Organisation Positions, and includes access to information about past occupants of these positions. For information about current occupants of these positions, see Current senior Australian Defence Organisation personnel.

The Australian Defence Organisation (ADO) consists of both the uniformed military, known as the Australian Defence Force (ADF), and the civilian Department of Defence, which includes a number of civilian support organisations. Nominally, the Chief of the Defence Force (CDF) heads the ADF, and the Secretary (of the Department of Defence) heads the civilian organisations, but in fact, they jointly manage the Australian Defence Organisation under a "diarchy", and both report directly to the Minister for Defence.

Since 19xx, the highest active rank in the Australian Defence Force is reserved for the CDF. This is a four-star rank and the CDF is the only Australian officer at that level. As a result of the diarchy, the Secretary of the Department of Defence is of an equivalent level.

This page provides access to information about senior ADO positions (both civilian and military) at the equivalent four-, three-, and, where useful, two- and one-star levels.

Famous quotes containing the words senior, australian, defence, organisation and/or positions:

    I suffer whenever I see that common sight of a parent or senior imposing his opinion and way of thinking and being on a young soul to which they are totally unfit. Cannot we let people be themselves, and enjoy life in their own way? You are trying to make that man another you. One’s enough.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    Beyond the horizon, or even the knowledge, of the cities along the coast, a great, creative impulse is at work—the only thing, after all, that gives this continent meaning and a guarantee of the future. Every Australian ought to climb up here, once in a way, and glimpse the various, manifold life of which he is a part.
    Vance Palmer (1885–1959)

    Sow seed—but let no tyrant reap;
    Find wealth—let no imposter heap;
    Weave robes—let not the idle wear;
    Forge arms—in your defence to bear.
    Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822)

    It is because the body is a machine that education is possible. Education is the formation of habits, a superinducing of an artificial organisation upon the natural organisation of the body.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–1895)

    What arouses the indignation of the honest satirist is not, unless the man is a prig, the fact that people in positions of power or influence behave idiotically, or even that they behave wickedly. It is that they conspire successfully to impose upon the public a picture of themselves as so very sagacious, honest and well-intentioned.
    Claud Cockburn (1904–1981)
