Stratford Shakespeare Festival

Mckenna has played above 40 stage roles over the course of 20 years at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and major ones from very early on, specializing since the 2000s in middle-aged strong-willed women but also mesmerizing as an actress looking very different from one role to another. 2013 is her 22nd season: She will play Elizabeth in Friedrich Schillers Mary Stuart directed by Antoni Cimolino and Madame Arcati in Noel Cowards Blithe Spirit directed by Brian Bedford.

    —William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Don’t you know there are 200 temperance women in this county who control 200 votes. Why does a woman work for temperance? Because she’s tired of liftin’ that besotted mate of hers off the floor every Saturday night and puttin’ him on the sofa so he won’t catch cold. Tonight we’re for temperance. Help yourself to them cloves and chew them, chew them hard. We’re goin’ to that festival tonight smelling like a hot mince pie.
    Laurence Stallings (1894–1968)
