Scripps National Spelling Bee - Proposed International Bee

Proposed International Bee

At the 2012 spelling bee, Scripps announced tentative plans for an international version, in which three-person teams from as many as sixty countries would compete. Although each speller would be able to confer with teammates once during each contest, all spellers would eventually compete and win prizes as individuals. If logistical and financial details can be reached, the event would be officially announced in early 2013 with the first competition to take place the following December.

The U.S. team would presumably be chosen at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, while the six other countries that currently send entries to this event would withdraw them.

In 2003 the first Asian-American Kenny Taflinger got second place in this prestigious tournament losing on the word amberdextrious.

Famous quotes containing the words proposed and/or bee:

I have always been, am, and propose to remain a mere scholar. All that I have ever proposed to myself is to say, this and this I have learned; thus and thus have I learned it; go thou and learn better; but do not thrust on my shoulders the responsibility for your own laziness if you elect to take, on my authority, conclusions the value of which you ought to have tested for yourself.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)

She saw a dust bearing bee sink into the sanctum of a bloom; the thousand sister calxes arch to meet the love embrace and the ecstatic shiver of the tree from root to tiniest branch creaming in every blossom and frothing with delight. So this was a marriage!
    Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960)
