Scratch Reflex - Conclusion

Conclusion

The scratch reflex has been extensively studied to understand the behavior of vertebrate neural networks. This reflex serves as an excellent model for such research because the circuitry required to generate this response has been found to exist within the spinal cord. This allows researchers to access, record from, and manipulate the circuitry involved in the scratch reflex to characterize neural networks. There still exist large voids in our understanding of biological neural networks, even with a system as well defined as the scratch reflex.

Famous quotes containing the word conclusion:

The source of our actions resides in an unconscious propensity to regard ourselves as the center, the cause, and the conclusion of time. Our reflexes and our pride transform into a planet the parcel of flesh and consciousness we are.
    E.M. Cioran (b. 1911)

I have come to the conclusion that the closer people are to what may be called the front lines of government ... the easier it is to see the immediate underbrush, the individual tree trunks of the moment, and to forget the nobility the usefulness and the wide extent of the forest itself.... They forget that politics after all is only an instrument through which to achieve Government.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)

The conclusion suggested by these arguments might be called the paradox of theorizing. It asserts that if the terms and the general principles of a scientific theory serve their purpose, i. e., if they establish the definite connections among observable phenomena, then they can be dispensed with since any chain of laws and interpretive statements establishing such a connection should then be replaceable by a law which directly links observational antecedents to observational consequents.
