Schempp-Hirth Duo Discus - Thomas Crown Affair

Thomas Crown Affair

A Duo Discus was used in the 1999 film The Thomas Crown Affair. This film shows Thomas Crown reaching to the front controls after letting Renee Russo fly the glider to assist her. This is normally physically impossible in any tandem two-seater. For the film, a set was used, and the rear instrument panel was removed to allow Pierce Brosnan take the bit of artistic license while on the ground. Undoing the seat straps in flight to allow the rear pilot to lean forward would be hazardous, as unbelted pilots have been ejected through canopies by turbulence. The static cockpit section used in the film had the canopy hinges on the left rather than the standard right-hand side.

Famous quotes containing the words thomas, crown and/or affair:

If I were a woman, I would never trust men who say they are feminists. Either they are acting out of guilt, trying to establish credentials, or they think they might be able to pick up more girls. If I were a woman, I would say, go away and have your first period. Then come back and tell me you are a feminist.
    —David Thomas (b. 1959)

From the crown of his head to the sole of his foot, he is all mirth.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Time, which shows so vacant, indivisible, and divine in its coming, is slit and peddled into trifles and tatters. A door is to be painted, a lock to be repaired. I want wood, or oil, or meal, or salt; the house smokes, or I have a headache; then the tax; and an affair to be transacted with a man without heart or brains; and the stinging recollection of an injurious or very awkward word,—these eat up the hours.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
