Saxifragales - Families

Families

Saxifragales contains about 2470 species. These are distributed into 15 families, or into 12 families if Haloragaceae sensu lato is recognized as a family consisting of Haloragaceae sensu stricto, Penthorum, Tetracarpaea, and Aphanopetalum. About 95% of the species are in five families: Crassulaceae (1400), Saxifragaceae (500), Grossulariaceae (150 - 200), Haloragaceae (150), and Hamamelidaceae (100). Most of the families are monogeneric. The number of genera in each family is as follows:

  • Crassulaceae (34),
  • Saxifragaceae (33),
  • Hamamelidaceae (27),
  • Haloragaceae (8),
  • Peridiscaceae (4),
  • Altingiaceae (3),
  • Iteaceae (2),
  • Paeoniaceae (1),
  • Cercidiphyllaceae (1),
  • Daphniphyllaceae (1),
  • Aphanopetalaceae (1),
  • Tetracarpaeaceae (1),
  • Penthoraceae (1),
  • Pterostemonaceae (1), and
  • Grossulariaceae (1).

Some authors do not recognize Choristylis as a separate genus from Itea. Similarly, some authors sink Liquidambar and Semiliquidambar into Altingia. Thus Altingiaceae and Iteaceae are monogeneric in some classifications.

Famous quotes containing the word families:

Families have always been in flux and often in crisis; they have never lived up to nostalgic notions about “the way things used to be.” But that doesn’t mean the malaise and anxiety people feel about modern families are delusions, that everything would be fine if we would only realize that the past was not all it’s cracked up to be. . . . Even if things were not always right in families of the past, it seems clear that some things have newly gone wrong.
    Stephanie Coontz (20th century)

Children from humble families must be taught how to command just as other children must be taught how to obey.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

You hear a lot of dialogue on the death of the American family. Families aren’t dying. They’re merging into big conglomerates.
    Erma Bombeck (b. 1927)
