Sarkar (film) - Commercial and Critical Reception

Commercial and Critical Reception

Sarkar was an above average success at the box office and was greeted very well by critics. Critics liked the way the movie indigenised The Godfather and introduced a political angle to it. The actors, particularly the trio of Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Kay Kay Menon, were lavished with praise for their controlled yet intense performances. Abhishek Bachchan in particular, was rewarded for his portrayal as a son who is inexperienced but enters an unknown world so as to save his father. He won the following awards:

  • Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award
  • Zee Cine Award Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Male
  • IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actor

Famous quotes containing the words commercial, critical and/or reception:

So by all means let’s have a television show quick and long, even if the commercial has to be delivered by a man in a white coat with a stethoscope hanging around his neck, selling ergot pills. After all the public is entitled to what it wants, isn’t it? The Romans knew that and even they lasted four hundred years after they started to putrefy.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

The critical period in matrimony is breakfast-time.
    —A.P. (Sir Alan Patrick)

To the United States the Third World often takes the form of a black woman who has been made pregnant in a moment of passion and who shows up one day in the reception room on the forty-ninth floor threatening to make a scene. The lawyers pay the woman off; sometimes uniformed guards accompany her to the elevators.
    Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)
