San Francisco Municipal Railway Fleet

San Francisco Municipal Railway Fleet

With five different modes of transport from many different vendors, the San Francisco Municipal Railway, or Muni as it is commonly known, runs one of the most diverse fleets of vehicles in the United States. Roughly 800 buses, 200 streetcars, and 40 cable cars see active duty. Muni's cable cars constitute the oldest and largest such system remaining in service in the world and is the only one still running with manually operated cars in street traffic. Its fleet of electric trolleybuses is the largest in the United States. Muni is in the process of replacing its diesel bus fleet with diesel-electric hybrid buses. A summary of the current and historic vehicles follows.

Famous quotes containing the words san francisco, san, francisco, municipal, railway and/or fleet:

Today, San Francisco has experienced a double tragedy of incredible proportions. As acting mayor, I order an immediate state of mourning in our city. The city and county of San Francisco must and will pull itself together at this time. We will carry on as best as we possibly can.... I think we all have to share the same sense of shame and the same sense of outrage.
    Dianne Feinstein (b. 1933)

Swan/Mary Rutledge: Oh no, no. I’m not running away. I came here to get something, and I’m going to get it.
Col. Cobb: Yes, but San Francisco is no place for a woman.
Swan: Why not? I’m not afraid. I like the fog. I like this new world. I like the noise of something happening.... I’m tired of dreaming, Colonel Cobb. I’m staying. I’m staying and holding out my hands for gold—bright, yellow gold.
    Ben Hecht (1893–1964)

No sane local official who has hung up an empty stocking over the municipal fireplace, is going to shoot Santa Claus just before a hard Christmas.
    Alfred E. Smith (1873–1944)

Her personality had an architectonic quality; I think of her when I see some of the great London railway termini, especially St. Pancras, with its soot and turrets, and she overshadowed her own daughters, whom she did not understand—my mother, who liked things to be nice; my dotty aunt. But my mother had not the strength to put even some physical distance between them, let alone keep the old monster at emotional arm’s length.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

They ... fleet the time carelessly, as they did in the golden world.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
