Samson - Archaeology

Archaeology

In August 2012 archaeologists from Tel Aviv University announced the discovery of a circular stone seal approximately 15 millimetres in diameter. The seal was found on the floor of a house at Beth Shemesh and is dated to the 12th century BCE. This is in the area where the Bible reports Samson to have lived, and Professor Shlomo Bunimovitz, a co-director of the dig, was reported as saying that the artefact helps "anchor the story in an archaeological setting." He also said "If we are right and what we see on the seal is a representation of a man meeting a lion, it shows that the Samson legend already existed around the area of Beth Shemesh during that time period. We can date it quite precisely."
