Sam Butcher - Death of His Sons

Death of His Sons

While Sam was in The Philippines, his 27-year-old son Phillip was killed. Sam turned inward, started drinking heavily, and could not pursue his interests in art.

Sam dealt with his grief by returning to art. He worked tirelessly day and night on paintings in what is now called Phillip's Room at the Chapel. According to Chapel employees who watched Sam, "it was as though he was possessed by depression and anger. Finally, his body and mind could take it no more. Sam broke down, and stopped."

Sam's children urged their father to take better care of himself, and took over all business responsibilities at PMI. Sam left for The Philippines for an extended period.

On October 14, 2012, his son Tim Butcher, the inspiration for many Precious Moments pieces, died.

Famous quotes containing the words death of, death and/or sons:

Let those who desire a secure homeland conquer it. Let those who do not conquer it live under the whip and in exile, watched over like wild animals, cast from one country to another, concealing the death of their souls with a beggar’s smile from the scorn of free men.
    José Martí (1853–1895)

The dignity to be sought in death is the appreciation by others of what one has been in life,... that proceeds from a life well lived and from the acceptance of one’s own death as a necessary process of nature.... It is also the recognition that the real event taking place at the end of our life is our death, not the attempts to prevent it.
    Sherwin B. Nuland (b. 1930)

What strikes me as odd now is how much my father managed to get across to me without those heart-to-hearts which I’ve read about fathers and sons having in the study or in the rowboat or in the car.... Somehow I understood completely how he expected me to behave, in small matters as well as large, even though I can’t remember being given any lectures about it beyond the occasional, undramatic “You might as well be a mensch.”
    Calvin Trillin (20th century)
