Childhood
Samuel John Butcher was born in Jackson, Michigan on January 1, 1939. He was the third of five children born to a poor family. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Redding, California.
As a young man, Sam was a "chalkboard minister," spreading the teachings of Christianity through illustrations. This job paid very little, so Sam supplemented his income as a janitor.
With the guide of Reverend Royal Blue, Sam made the decision to follow deeper into Christianity. He joined the Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. There he met Bill Biel, with whom he would start his first business, Jonathan & David (J&D). During his ten year career with the CEF, Sam's work was seen by millions of people through the "Tree House Club" television programs.

Famous quotes containing the word childhood:
“Most childhood problems dont result from bad parenting, but are the inevitable result of the growing that parents and children do together. The point isnt to head off these problems or find ways around them, but rather to work through them together and in doing so to develop a relationship of mutual trust to rely on when the next problem comes along.”
—Fred Rogers (20th century)
“We find that even the parents who justify spanking to themselves are defensive and embarrassed about it....I suspect that deep in the memory of every parent are the feelings that had attended his own childhood spankings, the feelings of humiliation, of helplessness, of submission through fear. The parent who finds himself spanking his own child cannot dispel the ghosts of his own childhood.”
—Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)
“Children became an obsessive theme in Victorian culture at the same time that they were being exploited as never before. As the horrors of life multiplied for some children, the image of childhood was increasingly exalted. Children became the last symbols of purity in a world which was seen as increasingly ugly.”
—C. John Sommerville (20th century)
