Reference in 2009 Economic Stimulus Debate

The preservation of the salt marsh harvest mouse habitat was a subject of discussion in 2009 Economic Stimulus package. The mouse was mentioned numerous times in congress by Republicans such as Rep. Mike Pence and Rep. Dan Lungren to highlight the wasteful spending of the bill. The main allegation was, that $30m of the 2009 economic stimulus will be spent on habitat restoration to protect the mouse. The rumor was started by Michael Steel, press secretary for John Boehner. This was disputed in a San Francisco Chronicle article by Democratic U.S. Rep Jackie Speier.

Famous quotes containing the words reference, economic, stimulus and/or debate:

In writing these Tales ... at long intervals, I have kept the book-unity always in mind ... with reference to its effect as part of a whole.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)

Under weak government, in a wide, thinly populated country, in the struggle against the raw natural environment and with the free play of economic forces, unified social groups become the transmitters of culture.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)

Decisive inventions and discoveries always are initiated by an intellectual or moral stimulus as their actual motivating force, but, usually, the final impetus to human action is given by material impulses ... merchants stood as a driving force behind the heroes of the age of discovery; this first heroic impulse to conquer the world emanated from very mortal forces—in the beginning, there was spice.
    Stefan Zweig (18811942)

Like man and wife who nightly keep
    Inconsequent debate in sleep
As they dream side by side.
    Robert Graves (1895–1985)
