Salome Alexandra - Prosperity

Prosperity

Rabbinical sources still further magnify the prosperity which Judea enjoyed under Alexandra. The Haggadah (Ta'anit, 23a; Sifra, ḤuḲḲat, i. 110) relates that during her rule, as a reward for her piety, rain fell only on Sabbath (Friday) nights; so that the working class suffered no loss of pay through the rain falling during their work-time. The fertility of the soil was so great that the grains of wheat grew as large as kidney-beans; oats as large as olives; and lentils as large as gold denarii. The sages collected specimens of these grains and preserved them to show future generations the reward of obedience to the Law, and what piety can achieve.

Famous quotes containing the word prosperity:

Throughout the 1980’s, we did hear too much about individual gain and the ethos of selfishness and greed. We did not hear enough about how to be a good member of a community, to define the common good and to repair the social contract. And we also found that while prosperity does not trickle down from the most powerful to the rest of us, all too often indifference and even intolerance do.
    Hillary Rodham Clinton (b. 1947)

If prosperity is regarded as the reward of virtue it will be regarded as the symptom of virtue.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)

Of prosperity mortals can never have enough.
    Aeschylus (525–456 B.C.)
