Sake Dean Mahomed - Restaurant Venture

Restaurant Venture

In 1810, after moving to London, Dean Mahomet opened the first Indian restaurant in England: the Hindoostanee Coffee House in George Street, near Portman Square, Central London. The restaurant offered such delights as the Hookha "with real Chilm tobacco, and Indian dishes, ... allowed by the greatest epicures to be unequalled to any curries ever made in England." This venture was ended due to financial difficulties.

Famous quotes containing the words restaurant and/or venture:

In a restaurant one is both observed and unobserved. Joy and sorrow can be displayed and observed “unwittingly,” the writer scowling naively and the diners wondering, What the hell is he doing?
    David Mamet (b. 1947)

If I venture to displace ... the microscopical speck of dust... on the point of my finger,... I have done a deed which shakes the Moon in her path, which causes the Sun to be no longer the Sun, and which alters forever the destiny of multitudinous myriads of stars.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)
