Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens - Plans and Activities

Plans and Activities

The main aim of the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens is to educate the public and to conserve endangered animals and plants. One way in which these species are protected is a program to breed them in captivity. It is hoped that this program can save many endangered animals and help to replenish their populations. Saigon Zoo is currently the only zoo in the world that has successfully bred Crested Argus Pheasants in captivity.

Nowadays, the zoo has received the support of foreign countries. In 1993, the Director of the Zoo proposed a long-term plan to improve the quality of management, housing and care for the animals. This plan came to a close in 2003.

Besides the conservation plan, the Conservation Education Department, started in 1999, created a plan to educate the public about how to protect animals and plants. Each year, 3,200 students visit the zoo, have a one-hour lecture and watch a 30-minute film.

After a long time of construction and development, Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden has become the largest zoo in Vietnam, and also a place for people to visit and study about fauna and flora. Visitors can not only study animals and plants, but can also learn how to protect these species.

Famous quotes containing the words plans and/or activities:

Consider any individual at any period of his life, and you will always find him preoccupied with fresh plans to increase his comfort. Do not talk to him about the interests and rights of the human race; that little private business of his for the moment absorbs all his thoughts, and he hopes that public disturbances can be put off to some other time.
    Alexis de Tocqueville (1805–1859)

Justice begins with the recognition of the necessity of sharing. The oldest law is that which regulates it, and this is still the most important law today and, as such, has remained the basic concern of all movements which have at heart the community of human activities and of human existence in general.
    Elias Canetti (b. 1905)
