    Why does man freeze to death trying to reach the North Pole? Why does man drive himself to suffer the steam and heat of the Amazon? Why does he stagger his mind with the mathematics of the sky? Walter Reisch (1903–1963)

    Now they heap the funeral pyre,
    And the torch of death they light;
    Ah! ‘tis hard to die by fire!
    William Makepeace Thackeray (1811–1863)

    You stars that reigned at my nativity,
    Whose influence hath allotted death and hell.
    Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593)
