Ryan Shay - Death

Death

On November 3, 2007, during the US Olympic marathon trials in New York City, Shay collapsed approximately 5+1⁄2 miles (8.9 km) into the race at 8:06 a.m. He was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 a.m. Doctors at the hospital who examined him reported that he died of a massive heart attack, due to a pre–existing enlarged heart condition. Autopsy results were initially inconclusive, leading to speculation over other possibilities for his death On March 18, 2008, Ellen Borakove, the Director of Public Affairs of the New York Chief Medical Examiner's Office released the following statement to Joe Shay, Ryan's father, regarding his final autopsy results: "Cardiac arrhythmia due to cardiac hypertrophy with patchy fibrosis of undetermined etiology. Natural causes."

Famous quotes containing the word death:

I don’t see no way out but death and, Caleb, you are up against a hard game when you got to die to beat it.
    Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960)

Surrealism is merely the reflection of the death process. It is one of the manifestations of a life becoming extinct, a virus which quickens the inevitable end.
    Henry Miller (1891–1980)

To fear death, my friends, is only to think ourselves wise, without being wise: for it is to think that we know what we do not know. For anything that men can tell, death may be the greatest good that can happen to them: but they fear it as if they knew quite well that it was the greatest of evils. And what is this but that shameful ignorance of thinking that we know what we do not know?
    Socrates (469–399 B.C.)
