Death

On November 3, 2007, during the US Olympic marathon trials in New York City, Shay collapsed approximately 5+1⁄2 miles (8.9 km) into the race at 8:06 a.m. He was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 a.m. Doctors at the hospital who examined him reported that he died of a massive heart attack, due to a pre–existing enlarged heart condition. Autopsy results were initially inconclusive, leading to speculation over other possibilities for his death On March 18, 2008, Ellen Borakove, the Director of Public Affairs of the New York Chief Medical Examiner's Office released the following statement to Joe Shay, Ryan's father, regarding his final autopsy results: "Cardiac arrhythmia due to cardiac hypertrophy with patchy fibrosis of undetermined etiology. Famous quotes containing the word death:

I admit that the generation which produced Stalin, Auschwitz and Hiroshima will take some beating; but the radical and universal consciousness of the death of God is still ahead of us; perhaps we shall have to colonize the stars before it is finally borne in upon us that God is not out there.
    R.J. Hollingdale (b. 1930)

Fatigue dulls the pain, but awakes enticing thoughts of death. So! that is the way in which you are tempted to overcome your loneliness—by making the ultimate escape from life..—No! It may be that death is to be your ultimate gift to life: it must not be an act of treachery against it.
    Dag Hammarskjöld (1905–1961)

...there is death in the pot!
    Bible: Hebrew, 2 Kings 4:40.
