Medals are awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing on the senior level. A separate junior event is also held.

Alexandr Nikitich Panshin became the first official Russian national champion and won the event three more times until 1900. From 1924 to 1992, Russian skaters competed at the Soviet Championships. The Russian event returned in 1993.
