There is dispute about her marriage. Some sources have reported that she was first married to Utbah ibn Abu Lahab. Muslim convert Uthman ibn Affan had long admired Ruqayyah and was then able to ask for her hand in marriage.

Famous quotes containing the words marriage and/or dispute:
“The parent who loves his child dearly but asks for nothing in return might qualify as a saint, but he will not qualify as a parent. For a child who can claim love without meeting any of the obligations of love will be a self-centered child and many such children have grown up in our time to become petulant lovers and sullen marriage partners because the promise of unconditional love has not been fulfilled.”
—Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)
“As for the dispute about solitude and society, any comparison is impertinent. It is an idling down on the plane at the base of a mountain, instead of climbing steadily to its top.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
