Rumi Maki - Modern Resurgence

Modern Resurgence

The practice of Rumi Maki outside of cultural activities has been revived since the 1960s by the research of Juan Ramon Rodriguez Flores from Lima, Peru. Today's training method is derived from this research; modern education of Rumi Maki is spread by Auka Wasi, (House of the Warrior) and non-profit organizations dedicated to the preservation of martial practices of the peoples of the Andes and the Amazon.

In the modern version of Rumi Maki, ten basic skills are taught: attack fists, elbows, headbutts, knocks, open hand, leg attacks, blocking, neutralizing, attacking from different heights, and weapons (sling, spear, bow and arrow, clubs, axes, etc.). In the last five skills, the philosophy of Inca, Andean cosmogony, festivals, and spiritual aspects of the rituals and ceremonies of the Andes are taught.

Famous quotes containing the words modern and/or resurgence:

In the deeper layers of the modern consciousness ... every attempt to succeed is an act of aggression, leaving one alone and guilty and defenseless among enemies: one is punished for success. This is our intolerable dilemma: that failure is a kind of death and success is evil and dangerous, is—ultimately—impossible.
    Robert Warshow (1917–1955)

By now, legions of tireless essayists and op-ed columnists have dressed feminists down for making such a fuss about entering the professions and earning equal pay that everyone’s attention has been distracted from the important contributions of mothers working at home. This judgment presumes, of course, that prior to the resurgence of feminism in the ‘70s, housewives and mothers enjoyed wide recognition and honor. This was not exactly the case.
    Mary Kay Blakely (20th century)
