Early Life and Career
Putnam was born in Sutton, Massachusetts. Rufus's father died when he was 6 or 7, and he temporarily lived with his paternal grandfather. From Salem, he was a half-brother to Joseph Putnam, the father of Israel Putnam, who became a renowned general during the American Revolution. After Putnam's mother remarried two years later to John Sadler, Rufus lived with his mother and stepfather in Sutton. The family ran an inn, which were community centers.
Putnam served with a Connecticut regiment during the French and Indian War. He served from 1757 to 1760. During the war, Putnam saw action in the Great Lakes region, near Lake Champlain.

Famous quotes containing the words early, life and/or career:
“A two-year-old can be taught to curb his aggressions completely if the parents employ strong enough methods, but the achievement of such control at an early age may be bought at a price which few parents today would be willing to pay. The slow education for control demands much more parental time and patience at the beginning, but the child who learns control in this way will be the child who acquires healthy self-discipline later.”
—Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)
“The touchstone for family life is still the legendary and so they were married and lived happily ever after. It is no wonder that any family falls short of this ideal.”
—Salvador Minuchin (20th century)
“Clearly, society has a tremendous stake in insisting on a womans natural fitness for the career of mother: the alternatives are all too expensive.”
—Ann Oakley (b. 1944)
