Royal West Academy

Royal West Academy (commonly referred to as Royal West or RWA) is a semi-private alternative anglophone secondary school in Montreal, Quebec. Royal West has limited enrollment, and prospective students are only admitted after an entrance examination and interview. It is situated on Easton Avenue in Montreal West, but its students come from all parts of the Greater Montreal Area. Royal West Academy is part of the English Montreal School Board (EMSB).

The EMSB allows Royal West to choose the first 180 students who score the highest points on the entrance exams held, usually, in October. The first 50 students with the highest grades get an "early acceptance"; the next 200 do an interview, where they choose the next 130 that get to attend Royal West Academy the following school year. Royal West has also placed high in scholastic math competitions, including its rank of first in Quebec in 2006.

Famous quotes containing the words royal, west and/or academy:

    Not to these shores she came! this other Thrace,
    Environ barbarous to the royal Attic;
    How could her delicate dirge run democratic,
    Delivered in a cloudless boundless public place
    To an inordinate race?
    John Crowe Ransom (1888–1974)

    The convent, which belongs to the West as it does to the East, to antiquity as it does to the present time, to Buddhism and Muhammadanism as it does to Christianity, is one of the optical devices whereby man gains a glimpse of infinity.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)

    I realized early on that the academy and the literary world alike—and I don’t think there really is a distinction between the two—are always dominated by fools, knaves, charlatans and bureaucrats. And that being the case, any human being, male or female, of whatever status, who has a voice of her or his own, is not going to be liked.
    Harold Bloom (b. 1930)
