Royal Rumble (1988) - Development

Development

Pat Patterson constructed the idea of the Royal Rumble Match. The rules were that each Superstar had to choose a number between 1 and 20. The # 1 and # 2 entrants would begin the match while the other participants would join the match every two minutes thereafter. Participants had to eliminate their opponents by tossing them over the top rope with both feet then touching the floor. The winner would be the last wrestler remaining after all others had been eliminated. It was similar to a battle royal. It was originally a television special shown on USA Network.

Less known is that the first experimental royal rumble match happened on October 4, 1987 in St. Louis, Missouri. Possibly because the event was a financial failure (drawing only 1,976) or because noting that this event happened would complicate the WWE's version of history for the audience, this event is not acknowledged to have taken place. The One Man Gang won the royal rumble event in 1987, last eliminating the Junkyard Dog.

Famous quotes containing the word development:

As long as fathers rule but do not nurture, as long as mothers nurture but do not rule, the conditions favoring the development of father-daughter incest will prevail.
    Judith Lewis Herman (b. 1942)

I could not undertake to form a nucleus of an institution for the development of infant minds, where none already existed. It would be too cruel.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The man, or the boy, in his development is psychologically deterred from incorporating serving characteristics by an easily observable fact: there are already people around who are clearly meant to serve and they are girls and women. To perform the activities these people are doing is to risk being, and being thought of, and thinking of oneself, as a woman. This has been made a terrifying prospect and has been made to constitute a major threat to masculine identity.
    Jean Baker Miller (20th century)
